Seat(s): I had no experience flying in the previous generation of Lufthansa Business Class seats, but from what I’m told these are a huge improvement. In 14D that’s harder to believe after having flown in the much better bulkhead seats in row 3 on our outbound trip, but those old seats were just space-age barcalounger style loafs that don’t turn into beds. While they do appear to be better, they’re certainly not perfect…

You’ve got a good amount of distance between you and your neighbor…well, at least your top half. 14D like most seats in the cabin angle you toward your neighbor, putting your feet very close together. If not for the non-porous barrier, there would most definitely be unwanted mid-sleep toe wrestling. What’s worse is that your feet are jammed into a rather small space, not ideal for anyone but particularly annoying if you’re taller as the footwell narrows toward the back.
The seat’s cushioning isn’t bad so if your feet are comfortably tucked away, sleep is possible.

Tech/Connectivity/Entertainment: While we wait for everyone else to catch up, Lufthansa’s got wi-fi. It’s not blazing fast but we were able to stream low-bandwidth audio and take care of basic surfing and social networking.
Don’t be afraid to use your bagful of electronic gizmos, the standard and USB powerports team up for full flight charging so that you don’t have to rely completely on the provided personal entertainment system for keeping busy.
Food: I opted out of the full meal experience on this one. Lufthansa’s express service gets you early dining on an abbreviated menu. You’ll get the appetizer, cheese and salad courses early so that you can get right to sleep.
What little I had was “okay”, but as on our flight in Lufthansa Business Class just a few days before, food seemed only slightly better than what you’d expect in economy… but on a fancy plate. The cheese course was the exception with a trio of fine cheeses served with apricot mustard chutney.
Service: Service was fantastic on this flight. Even as the last row in Business Class, the flight attendants were friendly and helpful throughout. I can’t speak for the hours in between while I slept but the first and last hours were great.

How we got em’: This was a large sliver of a Star Alliance award itinerary using US Airways Dividend Miles. The gang at PointsPros found a great all-business class trip using just a handful of miles to Asia (via Europe). (*US Airways in it’s merger with American Airlines has become a part of the OneWorld Alliance since this booking. Star Alliance award flights are no longer possible.)
