American Airlines A321T – First Class Seat 1F | Video

Seat(s): The width of these transcon-exclusive American Airlines First Class lie-flat seats might now wow you but, legroom and bed might. The seat’s flat-bed mode can accommodate someone taller than me. If you’re over pushing 6.5ft (and maybe a little more) you should fit nicely.

If the advertised 21″ of seat width isn’t enough, the aisle armrest can be pushed down into the base for easy rolling out and climbing back in. An out-of-the-way armrest makes it easier to crawl into bed.

There’s no single-button “relax” setting button in the seat control panel so it’ll take some experimenting from zero to get into a comfortable position. If it’s sleep you want, press and hold.

Tech/Connectivity/Entertainment: GoGo wi-fi is available if you’re here to surf or just can’t be disconnected from work. Your connected devices won’t suffer drainage with the power outlet somewhat inconveniently placed inside the head-level cubby area on the window side.

On our relatively large personal TV we found a good selection of movies, TV and specialty programming all controlled either by touchscreen or the smaller touch-remote. Our screen responded poorly when attempting to navigate menus but the remote worked fine.

Food: American’s signature mixed nuts came with water this time but most often enjoyed with a more grown-up drink. While snacking, the multi-course food main event is being assembled nearby.

Our starter was smoked salmon and seared tuna, both acceptably fresh and a good lead-in to the salad course and our choice of a main, the tasty but perhaps tiny for some Gorgonzola Crusted Beef Filet. While the portion felt small it was plenty combined with the other course. Chicken and a vegetarian option were offered as alternate entrees.

Desert was an indulgent Ben & Jerry’s ice cream sundae with our choice of topping. Other options for desert were a gourmet cheese plate, Four Seasons Mousse Cake and a specialty sundae.

Service: It’s tough to make this call after flying internationally in some really great first class cabins but I was sure to reset my expectations to “domestic” on this final segment of a larger itinerary. With the reset I found in-flight crew to be very pleasant and a step above what you’d expect in a typical domestic cabin. From priority boarding at the gate to arrival, gate agents and flight attendants were courteous and helpful.
