Summary:

I’ve always assumed that passengers were an afterthought to the designers of the E145 so there’s plenty of reason to squirm when it the only option on your next trip, but do these bulkhead seats make the hop tolerable?

Airline: United Express (Operated by Shuttle America.)
Aircraft: Embraer ERJ-145
Seat Info: Bulkhead Seats 3C & 3D – (“3B” & “3C” until 11/12/13)
Class: Economy Plus

Small step up to seats 3C and D.
You can either step up to your seat or trip and fall into it. – Seat 3C and 3D on a United ERJ-145.

Seat(s): Once you climb the tiny step up to the seats from the aisle aboard this United ERJ-145  you’ll find the extra knee space that you’d expect from a bulkhead seat, but stretching out might be a challenge. Although sold as “Economy Plus”, these seats don’t give you much more than typical economy legroom. In the window seat, you’ll also be fighting the curvature of the plane so you have to angle yourself slightly to get comfortable.

Better bets might be the exit rows for legroom or even closer to the front in bulkhead seat 1A

Tech/Connectivity: 2 tin cans attached by string (not provided) are allowed for chatting with other passengers, but only above 10,000 feet. Otherwise bring fully-charged gadgets or a good book. There are no power ports, no wi-fi and no audio/video entertainment on this plane.

Food: A Snack box should be available and you might get a package of snack mix. Other options include bringing your own food or simply gnawing on your Styrofoam coffee cup.

Service: You’re sharing 1 flight attendant with everyone else so it pays to be up front. You’ll get served quickly and on this flight being in a front row meant we got the smiley service that  might not exist the further back after rows of more cramped, cranky regional flyers.

Rating: 2 “hops” (of 5).

How we got em’: Bulkhead and exit row seats on the United ERJ-145 are sold as “Economy Plus” and should be an upgrade you can purchase while (and after) booking. Higher elite-level Mileage Plus members can reserve these seats at no extra cost.
