Is CLEAR Still Worth It in 2026?

Is CLEAR still worth it in 2026? It’s the question every traveler asks when standing in a 40-minute security line. CLEAR in 2026 isn’t the scrappy startup service we remember from a decade ago. It’s a massive biometric machine. If you’ve stepped into an airport lately, you’ve seen the pods, the ambassadors in neon, and the people breezing past the TSA PreCheck line like they own the place. But with the price tag creeping up and tech evolving, the question remains: is it still a must-have for your business travel essentials, or is it just another subscription to cancel?

The $209 Question

Let’s talk numbers first. The current price for CLEAR Plus is $209 per year.

That’s a jump from the early days. For that price, you could buy a decent suitcase or a few rounds of drinks at the United Polaris Lounge EWR. If you’re paying full retail out of pocket, you’re essentially betting $17 a month that the regular security line will fail you.

For the casual traveler hitting the skies twice a year, the math doesn’t work. For the road warrior? It’s a different story.

With biometrics and auto gates Is CLEAR Still Worth It in 2026

Airport Intel: The facial biometric / eGate shift

The biggest change in 2026 is the rollout of the facial biometric / eGate system. CLEAR has moved almost entirely away from the old-school fingerprint and iris scans.

The new system relies on high-fidelity facial biometrics. It’s faster, more accurate, and frankly, less “sci-fi horror movie” than the old iris cameras. This tech powers the new eGates, self-service kiosks that can verify your identity in under five seconds.

CLEAR’s clearly rushing this. FIFA World Cup 2026 prep. They’re pushing rollout for the ~20M visitors expected this June. And they’re saying “eGates everywhere” by end of 2026.

Current eGate Stats:

  • CLEAR+ footprint: 60+ airports.
  • eGates: 37 airports right now (expanding).
  • Speed: Sub-5-second verification.
  • The Experience: Scan your face, gate opens, walk to the physical screening. No ID out. No talking to a human unless something goes sideways.

The Credit Card Hack (The Only Way to Fly)

If you’re paying $209, you might be doing it wrong. The American Express Platinum Card still offers a full $209 annual credit for CLEAR Plus. If you have the card, the service is effectively free.

Partnerships with Delta and United also keep the price down for frequent flyers. Also: kids under 18 fly free with a CLEAR+ member.

  • Delta SkyMiles Members: Delta 360 and Diamond Medallion still get it free (rules have tightened up). Platinum, Gold, and Silver get a discount. Check your status level before renewing. If you’re flying Delta One Transcon, you likely already have the status to make this cheap.
  • United MileagePlus: Premier 1K isn’t free anymore (as of May 2025). It’s $129 now. Other tiered discounts still apply.

Is CLEAR Still Worth It in 2026

CLEAR Plus vs. TSA PreCheck: The Showdown

This is where travelers get confused. You don’t choose between CLEAR and TSA PreCheck; you stack them.

  1. TSA PreCheck: Gets you into the “shoes on, laptops in bag” lane. It’s ~$78–$85 for five years (depends on provider). It’s the foundation.
  2. CLEAR Plus: Gets you to the front of that PreCheck lane.

In 2026, the TSA PreCheck lines at hubs like ATL, LAX, and JFK are often longer than the standard lanes used to be. Everyone has PreCheck now. CLEAR is the “skip the line” pass for the “skip the line” lane.

The Verdict: If you have PreCheck but find yourself waiting 20 minutes at 6:00 AM on a Monday, CLEAR is the fix. If your home airport is a smaller regional hub with a three-minute wait, save your $209.

Airport Intel: The CLEAR Concierge

One of the newer perks being pushed is the CLEAR Concierge. In some markets, ambassadors are doing more than just pointing at a screen. They’re providing high-touch assistance for families and helping navigate the new eGate layouts.

It adds a layer of “premium” to an experience that can often feel like being herded through a high-tech cattle chute. It’s particularly useful at chaotic terminals like Newark Terminal A or during holiday surges.

A man is taking a selfie in a busy outdoor market. The street is lined with shops and stalls, and many people are walking around, some carrying shopping bags. The market has a lively atmosphere with various signs and lights visible in the background.
I’ve always preferred having some personal space, so CLEAR is usually an easy renewal choice.

Why 2026 is Different

The 30,000-foot view? The Lounge Wars have moved to the security checkpoint.

In the past, the bottleneck was the physical bag scan. Now, the bottleneck is identity verification. The TSA’s own facial recognition tech is catching up, but CLEAR still has the dedicated infrastructure to bypass the masses.

Also not helping: CLEAR’s at 33M+ members now. More people in the program = longer “skip the line” lines.

When you see a line snaking around the baggage claim at 5:00 PM on a Thursday, and you walk up to a CLEAR pod and get through in 45 seconds, the $209 feels like a bargain.

The Casual Takeaway

Is CLEAR still worth it?

  • Yes: If you fly more than 10 times a year.
  • Yes: If you have an Amex Platinum or high-tier airline status.
  • Yes: If you value your sanity more than $17 a month.
  • No: If you only fly once a year to visit your aunt in Ohio.
  • No: If you think facial recognition is “The Matrix” coming to life.

For the modhop crowd: the people who live in lounges and know which amenity kits have the best lip balm: CLEAR remains a staple. It’s about the frictionless journey. It’s about getting to the lounge five minutes earlier so you can enjoy the pre-game snacks.

The image shows an airport security checkpoint with automated gates. The gates have glass barriers and are equipped with digital screens and card readers. The area is well-lit with large windows in the background, and the floor is made of polished tiles.

Quick Intel Recap

  • The Cost: $209/year (Retail).
  • The Tech: Facial biometrics + eGates.
  • The Footprint: CLEAR+ at 60+ airports; eGates at 37 (expanding).
  • The Roadmap: CLEAR says eGates everywhere by end of 2026 (World Cup rollout push).
  • The Reality: 33M+ members now, so yeah, lines can be longer.
  • The Strategy: Use the Amex Platinum credit to pay for it.
  • The Requirement: Must be paired with TSA PreCheck for the best experience.
