Airline: Virgin Atlantic
Aircraft: 787-9
Seat maps:  Virgin Atlantic | SeatGuru
Our Seat(s): 24A | 24C
Class: Virgin Atlantic Premium Economy

Seat(s): If you crave extra width from your plane seat, the upgrade to Virgin Atlantic Premium Economy can be pretty worthwhile. Head to head with a typical seat in economy, you gain an impressive 3.5 inches of hip space and just 1″ shy of what’s offered in Upper Class. Legroom is good here too with a few inches of stretch space over what’s offered in the back. Sure, it’s not a lie-flat

Virgin Atlantic Premium Economy Seat
Nice and wide. Seats in Virgin Atlantic Premium Economy aboard this 787-900 give you a big upgrade in wiggle room.

upgrade but if the only sleep you’re planning on is a cat-nap, this might be the right balance of comfort and savings.

Tech/Connectivity/Entertainment:  Power ports are one per seat and placed in that awkward lower console-front spot in between the seats but it’s a small price to pay for having a fully charged phone when you arrive.

Virgin’s Vera entertainment system has an impressively large collection of movies, TV  shows. music and games so time will fly while you sit…comfortably. While you watch and/or listen, the small screen built into your handheld remote can be programmed to display the flight map so you know where you are in the sky at all times.

Wi-fi is on offer here too and it worked well for us. Price is comparable to what you’d pay at a hotel and speeds are fairly average for mid-air internet. We were able to stream short videos (Modhop reviews, of course) with little or no lag and typical lo-fi surfing with ease.

Virgin Atlantic Premium Economy Meal
Presentation aims to make you happily accept this meal as more than it is…an economy meal.

Food: If you’re flying away from London, Virgin Atlantic Premium Economy will have you feeling like you never left the pub. Cottage Pie was our main course served in tiny dishware instead of Reynolds Wrap. Other than presentation, meals were no better than what you’d find in a good economy cabin.

What’s great about flying in Virgin Atlantic Premium Economy aboard the 787 is the self-serve snack bar. Anytime you feel the urge, just walk to the front of the cabin and grab from a selection of edibles.

Service: The crew assigned to Premium Economy on this flight balanced friendly with professional like I’ve never seen. Not an ounce of annoyance was displayed by flight attendants… even where it might have been easy to roll eyes. The happy service was paired with well-timed meal service and enhanced by sexy mood lighting.
