What is it about a road trip that people love the most? There are probably a number of things, but, and we know it’s a generalization, a lot of people love the freedom that comes with the open road. A road trip can take a while, and there are more direct ways to get to a specific destination, but there has to be something about the journey itself that makes all the difference. This is the beauty of a road trip; you’ll have your start and end points, and the rest is entirely up to you.
Any freedom awarded by an ambitious road trip can be curtailed somewhat if your budget is a limited one. If you don’t have the money to do anything you want and go anywhere you want, you’ll have to make some choices and some compromises. Luckily, this does not have to be a negative, and there are a number of ways you can get more out of a budget road trip if you try…
Yeah, not ideal if you’re a club-level hotel type (like Jake) but one of the most expensive elements of your road trip is going to be your accommodation. You’ll need to sleep somewhere every night, and that could become pricey, fast.
One solution is to expect to camp when you can. You might not be able to do it every night, but if you have the camping essentials with you in the car, when the opportunity presents itself, you can take it.
This idea might make some people shudder, especially because we’ve already talked about how freeing a road trip is and why that’s the reason most people will choose to take one. However, booking some (not all) things ahead of time can really help when it comes to managing your budget, and it will ensure that you get to see and do all the things you want to see and do along the way. It will also mean you don’t run out of money halfway through, which could be a huge problem.
Booking in advance means lower prices in a lot of cases, whether it’s a tourist attraction or a hotel room. Advance rates, particularly on hotels and car rentals, can save you money when also paying a non-refundable rate up front (Just be sure your plans are settled). By booking some of the main points of your trip, you’ll have a safety net to ensure you have something to do and somewhere to go, and you’ll still have a chance to be spontaneous with the money you’re saving.
Speeding is expensive and not only increases your risk of getting a ticket but can also inflate your gas bill. Before you hit the road, make sure your vehicle is in good condition. This includes checking the oil, tires, and brakes. Performing proper maintenance on your vehicle will ensure it runs as efficiently as possible throughout your trip. Another way to drive cautiously is to avoid distractions. Distractions can lead to a car accident, so keeping your eyes on the road at all times is essential. If you are involved in an accident, contacting experienced car accident lawyers can help you with the legal process and ensure your rights are protected. Understanding how cautious driving can save you money will ensure a successful and safe road trip.
Here is some more planning to consider, but hopefully, you’ve already seen that it is worth doing. In this case, it’s about planning your route, which is something you might decide to do anyway. Fact is, there are a number of toll roads (that you have to pay to use) throughout the country, and although they might only be a small amount of money each, if you use a lot of them, you’ll find it adds up. Therefore, planning a route that avoids most, and ideally, all, of these roads is the best solution.
As a bonus, when you avoid the tolls, you’ll often have to take the back roads, and you might find some exciting and unusual places that you would otherwise have missed.
