Getting charged and being entertained on a regional jet. No, I’m not kidding. Personal TV and USB power aboard an Air Canada Embraer 175 in first class.
The Seat: Legroom and seat width were comparable to similar Embraer 170-series aircraft but with a perk most other regional jets don’t have. Entertainment. Air Canada’s EnRoute personal entertainment touch-screen is a nice plus even if it’s unlikely you’ll watch a whole movie. In fact, I was surprised at how nice it was to have on a flight so short I didn’t want to dig out my laptop or pay for wi-fi (which wasn’t offered on this flight anyway). Comfortable enough for a quick jump under 2.5 hours or so.

Food: This was the same exact dish I had been served on an earlier Air Canada flight so I’ll just repeat: The cold chicken dish I was served was a healthy but bland choice. It was also small.   For the money I’d hope for a side salad and maybe a brownie.

Summary: These are likely some of the better seats I’ve seen aboard a regional jet with the added bonus of touch-screen personal entertainment with movies, recorded TV and more. That said, TV is also available in economy so I’d only recommend a paid upgrade if the price is right and your flight is at or more than 2 hours.

Rating: 4 hops (of 5)

Strategy: Upgrades can be purchased at check-in or at the airport for miles or cash. If nothing is available when checking in online, try again at the counter when you get to the airport (get there early).
