Have you been feeling that itch to go somewhere new again? It’s not unlikely that your wanderlust is stronger than ever, after not being able to go anywhere for a long time. If this sounds like you, then let’s we’ve got some ides for how to get going again now that restrictions are now easing. While you may not be able to go anywhere that you want just yet, there are still options for you to sate your wanderlust, even if it’s just for a little while. Here, we’ll dig into some of the ways that you can get back into travelling.

Familiar destinations could be a good starting point as we start to travel again.

Go Familiar First

The first thing that you might want to try is going somewhere familiar first. There are no rules that say you’ve got to go somewhere new in order to satisfy the travel bug within you, so it’s okay to re-visit places you’ve been before. We suggest this as a way to just give you that travel feeling all over again in place where you don’t have to worry about not knowing your way around. When you haven’t done something for a while, doing it again can be a daunting task, even if there is nothing for you freak out about. Taking this aspect out of it helps to alleviate worries about getting back into the swing of things when it comes to navigating a new location.

You can get back into the feel of being somewhere that isn’t home, and who knows, you might be able to find things that you didn’t get to experience the last time you were there. This should help you build up your travel confidence and allow you to feel good when it comes to the next time you want to go somewhere new.

Your Travel To Do List

Even if you know where you are going to be headed, then we suggest you plan out some stuff to do. Of course, you can go and find exciting things when you are there, and explore the destination in a little more depth. However, it can help to have some smaller activities planned out so that you are sure you have something new to experience while you are there. Eliminate tourist regret by visiting the places you most want to see while you’re there. I, for one, am glad I got to see Arrowhead Stadium, Kansas City Chiefs home ground the single time I visited Kansas City. If you’re a ride-junkie, you might want to experience some of the theme parks (the local Six-Flags, Coney Island, etc) that are close to where you’re staying. It’s entirely up to you, but it’s good to have this kind of thing on your to-do list before you hop on your plane.

The internet is naturally a good starting point for ideas. We’re not suggesting that you put together a detailed itinerary that accounts for every second that you are there, but grabbing two or three ideas from the attractions section of TripAdvisor or Kayak is a good starting point. It may not be the best use of points but travel currencies like Chase Ultimate Rewards can be used for a long list of activities when booking through their portal.

Go On A Mini Adventure

If you don’t like to stay in the same place, but you are still a little nervous about getting back into things, try a mini adventure. So, instead of travelling to ten countries in 3 months like you may have done before, maybe try to do 2 countries in one month. Keep it short, but also get to experience more than one place in a single trip. Most of us with wanderlust always want to see something new and exciting for us, so staying in the same place might not be what makes you happy. It doesn’t have to be, but you also don’t have to go to multiple countries in a short space of time right now.

A mini adventure could be just what you need to ease yourself back into travel life. Who knows, you might even find that you like doing it this way a lot better than you liked trying to squeeze everything into a short timeframe and end up missing things.

Be Like Santa, Make a List

Fire up your favorite list app (we use Google Keep) so that you have a list of destinations in mind for when you want to get back into travelling. This saves a TON of time when it comes to trying to decide where to go. We’re sure that there are many places that you want to go, and sure you’re going to have to choose which order you’re going to visit them in, but this isn’t anywhere near as difficult as actually coming up with somewhere to go. Have a look at your list of destinations and see which place jumps out at you the most, because this is where you want to go first.

If you come up with more places that you want to visit, add them to the list. It might feel like your list is never ending, but trust us, one day it will come to an end and this is going to be a super sad day for you. As such, you’re going to want to make the most of every second that you have got in the new places.

Save Up or Use Points

You might not have the money to go travelling right now, and don’t worry because you wouldn’t be alone. A lot of people don’t have the spare money that they would need in order to go travelling, but that just means you’ll want to save up.  It might take you a little while, but you know that it is coming and you can start getting excited for it. Work out how much you would need for your first trip, and then when you have saved up enough money, you can go!

Alternately use those unused points or miles you’ve been saving. There’s little question that airline miles and credit card points will continue to devalue so this may be the time to put them to work. Also keep an eye out for lucrative credit card signup bonuses.

Throw Yourself In The Deep End

If you don’t want to ease yourself back in and you would rather just take the plunge, then you can throw yourself in the deep end. Go back to trying to fit in a large amount of countries in a small amount of time. Go somewhere completely new where you don’t speak the language and have no idea how public transport works. This in itself is fun for a lot of people, so if this is what you want to do, then by all means go ahead. The only thing that you have got to remember is that things can be difficult when you’re in a new place and the memory of the struggle might not be present in your mind right now. You’ll figure it out when you get there, and we hope that everything is just as exciting as you remember it to be.

Let Jake know what you’ve got planned in the comments or @modhop on twitter and instagram. The great thing about travel is that it’s not going anywhere. There are always going to places in the world for you to explore, and it’s for this reason that you can afford to take your time getting yourself back into the travelling spirit. If your wanderlust is stronger than ever, then it’s time to find a new adventure. We wish you the very best of luck, and hope that you have a fantastic time wherever you end up.
